METHODOLOGY
Comparing the positions of a set of candidates running for the same office is very simple. This assumes that the *elective office, *candidates' names, *web site addresses, and *e-mail addresses are displayed in a compact format and easy to find. Below the Methodology section are candidate lists for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 15th Ohio District and an Ohio seat in the U.S. Senate. Other lists are available. The on-line version of the Voter Information Bulletin (VIB) published by the League of Women Voters carries the same compact formats, see: [X]. The Franklin County Board of Elections also posts compact formats for some candidates on their "Candidates List", see: [X].

To determine the House of Representatives candidates' positions on, for example, U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, follow these instructions:

Ideally, you will have learned the position of all candidates and can now make a comparison. So far, you have only "listened", but not "spoken". If you wish to give the candidates feedback, their e-mail addresses are handy in the compact format. As mentioned above, I used the issue of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. At the time I made a comparison scan, I was the only candidate to have a position on this issue. None the less, I was interested in their thinking. So, my e-mail message to the other four candidates was (a) it would be useful if you too would post a position on your campaign web site and (b) here is a hyperlink [X] to my position statement. Because a hyperlink reference may be to anywhere, it does not have to be to the site of another candidate in the same race.

I invite readers to run a comparison scan and give feedback to the five Ohio U.S. Senate candidates listed near the bottom of this page. When I did a scan, two candidates had in-depth position statements on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East---Daniel LaBotz and Rob Portman. The next step is to e-mail the candidates your feedback.
